Sandpaper is sold by grit number. The higher the number, the finer the finish you'll get from it.

Steps:
1. Start with a low-number grit and step up to higher numbers for the best finish.

2. Choose between aluminum oxide and garnet types of paper. Garnet is more expensive, but it lasts longer. Aluminum oxide is good for general use; garnet is best for finishing and sanding between layers of varnish.

3. Go with 80 to 100 grit papers to remove existing finishes.

4. Try 110 to 150 grits for preparatory finishing and follow with 180 grit for the final sanding of softwoods.

5. Use 300 to 400 grit papers between layers of varnish and final sanding of hardwoods.

6. Consider 800 grit wet/dry for finishing extremely hard woods.

Warnings:
Wear a dust mask and safety goggles when sanding.
