A sump pump can help avoid flooding and keep your basement dry.

Steps:
1. Shop for pumps. You can look at major building-supply stores such as Home Depot or check prices through a plumber or waterproofing contractor.

2. Decide what size pump to buy. Sump pumps typically range between 1/3- and 1/2-horsepower with pumping capacity of 2,200 to 3,000 gallons per hour.

3. Consider buying a battery-operated pump or a generator if your area is prone to power failures during storms.

4. Hire a contractor to install a sump pit in your basement if one is not already present.

5. Consider hiring a contractor to install the pump if you are not comfortable with doing it yourself.

Tips:
Expect to spend $150 to $500 for a pump, depending on features and size.

You can install more than one pump if your flooding problem is severe.

When do most homeowners find out that their sump pump has failed? When it is too late! It is raining cats and dogs, rain water is contributing to the ground water and the water table is rising quickly. As the ground water level reaches the float activation set point. Regularly the sump pump will kick on and keep the water level below the basement slab, thereby alleviating the hydrostatic pressure below the basement floor.

Sadly, many homeowners find out the hard way that their sump pump is not working properly. The water table rises beyond a controllable level and hydrostatic pressure begins forcing water through floor cracks and floor/wall joints. The outcome is increased moisture levels inside the basement, which can lead to poor indoor air quality conditions, and in severe cases can lead to standing water filling up inside the basement causing havoc and misery.

The most important thing homeowners with basement waterproofing systems (sump pumps, basement drainage, etc.) can do is complete regular factory recommended maintenance procedures included in the manual that came with the sump pump. If a basement waterproofing company or local contractor/plumber installed the system they should have given you the original product manual. Many waterproofing companies offer annual maintenance to assist you in the maintenance of your sump pump(s) and waterproofing systems. It is highly recommended that if you decide to go forward with contracted maintenance that you ask lots of questions about how the company will service the system.

Perhaps you have purchased a home with a basement and for some reason there is no sump pump system in the basement. Should you run right out and buy a complete sump pump system and does your system have to have a hydromatic sump pump in it? What does "hydromatic" mean anyway?

Does Your Basement Flood?

Not all basements flood when it rains. Some basements flood sometimes and some basements take in water just about every time that it rains due to a high water table. This means that each particular basement will have its own requirements for water removal.

Water Activated

A hydromatic sump pump is a pump that contains some sort of trigger mechanism that turns it on automatically when water that needs to be pumped out is present. There are a few different type of hydormatic sump pump trigger mechanisms but by far the most popular is a simple float mechanism.

Float Trigger

Like a wheel, the float type of hydromatic sump pump trigger system just seems to be the oldest and the most reliable, so people have stuck with it. However; there is one downside of a float trigger on a hydromatic sump pump and that is that the water has to build up before the pump will go on.

Other Trigger Options

This is why some people opt for haydromatic sump pump trigger mechanisms that are engineered to sit much lower to the ground. While these newer trigger systems still require water to enter the sump basin to be activated they only require as little as an inch or so of water to activate.

Consider Your Options

Whether or not you actually need a hydromatic sump pump in your basement is entirely up to you. If you store valuables in your basement or have remodeled it into living space you may give it consideration even if you live in a desert where it never rains. This is because, even a broken pipe or misplaced garden hose that is left on can lead to a flooding disaster.
