I was just given an old upright vacuum with a hose attachment,
If I use the hose and its utensils while the vacuum is running on the
carpet, wont' it wear a hole in the carpet?? How do you all handle
that?
I dl'd the owners manual, but then lost it again in a HD failure, but
I don't think it dealt with this.
Thanks

My upright lifts the beater bar above the floor when it is locked in the
upright position - the position that one would normally use the hose and
attachments. Therefore, there is no friction between the rotation brush and
the floor. I had one sweeper with a clutch that could be disengaged so you
could use it on bare floors and for when you use the attachments.

Thanks for replying.
I should have said that this is a Eureka Whilwind Lite. Maybe that is
what is lite about it, that it doesn't do either of these things?
It does seem easy to adjust the height. I guess I should make sure
that is working and put it on "high carpet" when using the hose??
I also should have asked about the two flters it has, one in the
front and one in the back. I think the manual called one a hepa
filter. Do these things really do anything? Are they meant to do
more than keep the vacuum from stirriing up dust when it vacuums.
That is, to not make things worse? Does it do that?

Replying to my own post, I was hard on Eureka here. It turns out it
does do what you said one of yours does. When the handle latches into
straight up, it raises the roller. It even said so. I had trouble
reading the manual before, with acrobat (when it was big enough to
read, I had to scroll left an dright) but I finally went slowly
enough.

This is what it said:
HOW TO USE
The upright vacuum cleaner design allows use on multiple types of
carpeting and on upholstery or bare floors with attachments. When
using the attachment tools, place the handle in the upright
position. Do not place cleaner on furniture or steps as the brush
roll may cause damage.
This part above just hints that putting the handle upright will
protect the carpet, but it is more clear later.
NOTE: When handle is in upright position, brush
roll is lifted off carpet. This is normal.
Height adjustment will not change brush
roll level until the cleaner’s handle is
moved into the operating position.
......
How To Use Accessories
NOTE: Do not place cleaner on furniture or
steps as the brush roll may cause
damage. Place cleaner on floor with
the handle in storage position while
using accessories.
Dusting Brush is for furniture, blinds, books, lamp shades,
shelves. (On some models.)
