Hello,
I'm a (proud) single mother who just got a new place of her own. I'm brewing with ideas on how to decorate the new place because it's pretty bare right now. It's just white walls and off-white carpets. I want to make sure I choose something timeless. I've done some decorating of my own in the past and have a few regrets looking back (metal blinds and flower print wallpaper weren't even in style in the 90s!).
Does anyone have any ideas for a starter with a blank slate? Anyone know where I can get some free decorating advice?
Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

Hi Lostmom!
Wow, that sounds like fun! I suggest doing your homework first. This is not a bad place for great advice. I'd also check out some of the home and garden web sites for free advice, maybe Martha Stewart. If you have gmail, you can search google reader for all kinds of decorating news. If I were in your shoes, I'd seek free advice from a friend of mine with "good taste". Do you have any friends with that "timeless" look to their house? Perhaps a neighbor?
Wow, metal blinds and flowers? Really? Well, window treatments are a good starting point for an empty new home. If you're in CA, I'd suggest checking out Smith and Noble. They offer free in-home consultations with their own design experts. Here's their web site:

Hopefully this is helpful. Good luck and have fun!

Very often, when you have people living in your home with allergies there are several restrictions that can arise when it comes to home décor. You will have to take extra care about the materials you use when you decorating your home. However, just because allergies exist in the home there is no reason for it to look barren and cold. You can still decorate your home to be attractive and inviting. Here are some tips that you can use when decorating an allergy free home:
1. Eliminate Wall to Wall Carpeting -Wall to wall carpeting is a catch all for dust and dander, two things that cause allergies. If you have someone in your home who suffers from allergies, one way that you can keep your home allergen free is to use wood floors or tile instead of wall to wall carpeting in the house. Wall to wall carpeting can be a breeding ground for allergens and is best avoided when decorating for an allergen free home.
2. Use Ceiling Fans- Ceiling fans are one way to not only add light to your home, but also to circulate air. This can be beneficial if you have someone in your house who suffers from allergies. Installing ceiling fans is not difficult and can be accomplished by anyone who has a beginning knowledge of light installation. You will also find that ceiling fans help with the heating and cooling bills.
3. Use a Decorative Humidifier and Air Purifier- There are some decorative air humidifiers and purifiers on the market. These can do wonders when it comes to helping someone with allergies breathe easier. While you will not want these products to be the centerpiece of your home, you can put them in an area where they are inconspicuous. By getting one of the modern, attractive air purifiers, you can make them fit into a contemporary home. If you do not have contemporary décor, you can hide these products with a screen.
