View Full Version : Kitchen cabinets - a huge dilemma

Dear all,
I am new to this group and would really appreciate your opinion on the
following.
We are building a new house, and are considering upgrading the default
cabinets which are included in the base price, to 42" cabinets.
However, there is a problem with colour and wood selection.
Ideally, I wanted my kitchen to be white or off-white, with
black-and-stainless steel appliances. However, the white is only
available as a cheaper-looking PVC type of cabinet - that's for the
base price.
Another white version of the cabinet demonstrated in the showroom is a
shaker type of door, with 'milk' colour type of paint. It looks like a
spray paint to me. This cabinet costs much more.
The other options are maple and oak. I exclude oak because maple, in
my opinion, looks more contemporary. The next choice to the white
cabinets I would make would be 'brandy' stain of maple but this is not
exactly what I was dreaming about :(
I was very sure I wanted white cabinets, while I feel ambivalent about
maple. However, price is the major concern which is stopping me from
making such a decision. My opinion is such that we now have to
purchase the most we can afford at the moment, so that we are happy
with our decisions in the long run. My husband is of the same opinion,
however, he is trying to make a point that maple cabinets may look
more contemporary and that I'd better make sure I really want white
before paying that much money.
What is your opinion about white kitchen cabinets? Is it a good choice
in the long run? How do they perform, are they easy to clean, and will
the paint stay white, without turning yellow or something? If you were
me, would you choose white cabinets over natural wood type of
cabinets, provided you want to achieve not rustic, but rather clean
and contemporary look of your kitchen?
Thank you very much and have a good day!

I'd go for the maple--depending on the style of the door--they
can look very contemporary. You may even want to look at a
lighter wood for a more contemporary look, if you are in doubt.
The type of "white" finish varies widely and determines how well
they hold up.
