1. Construct a box from 3/4-inch MDF at coffee-table height and the size determined by the measurements of the pop-up table mechanism, recessing the bottom to accommodate the table's feet. Attach the wood pieces together using wood glue and wood screws.
2. Place the pop-up table mechanism inside the box so that the top is level with the box top, and mark the bottom of the mechanism on the inside of the box to determine placement. Screw two 2 x 4 pieces of wood along the inside of opposite sides of the box at this measurement. Secure the mechanism to the 2 x 4s.
3. Cut the tabletop from 1/2-inch birch plywood the desired size, extending it beyond the base. Secure the tabletop to the mechanism using wood screws and the hardware provided with the mechanism.
4. Add feet to the bottom of the table base. Trim the top and bottom of the base with decorative wood molding. Stain or finish as desired.
Tabletop Finish
1. Copy a scrap of molding on a copy machine, increasing the size if desired. Using painter's tape, adhere the copy to the tabletop along the outside edges to create a border.
2. Use a craft knife to cut out the design through the paper and score the wood. Remove the paper template.
3. Base coat with Colonial Maple wood stain. Using a small artist brush, apply Jacobean and Mahogany stains inside the scored lines, painting just up to the scoring. The stain will bleed up to the scored line.
4. Finish with polyurethane, either satin or semi-gloss.
