August 2003 - Newsletter
As usual the actual newsletter with graphics is at my web site SBTBILL.COM.
You may also request a mailed copy.
This month I start with the general ledger. The GL allows recording many
transactions that do not fit into the normal areas of accounts payable,
accounts receivable, etc. Here is an example in the Cougar Mountain General
Journal section. Suppose that the owner of the company needs to fund petty
cash by taking $50 out of his wallet and placing it in the petty cash fund.
What happens, 1) this is actually an additional investment in the company so
the owner's capital account needs to be increased. 2) The money in petty cash
goes up so it also has to be increased. Note that both accounts are increased.
This is possible because Asset accounts are increase with a debit and equity
accounts are increased with a credit. Thus the rule that debits must equal
credits is maintained.
Here is something new for ACCPAC Vision Point. Vision Point Extender is
designed to run with Vision Point 10 installations. It is fully XP compatible.
The program allows you to view multiple customers, multiple inventory items,
and enter multiple sales orders or invoices at the same time. Thus if you are
entering a fax order and get a call from another customer you can leave the fax
order on screen and handle the call in. Accounts payable functionality will be
available soon.
The Internet is a great place to find things. However, asking the question can
be a bit challenging. For instance if you wanted to find out about accounting
software vendors near you asking for accounting software might bring up a list
that would be less then useful. On the other hand doing a similar search for
Peachtree Las Vegas brings up several Las Vegas providers of support. Doing
the same with Quickbooks also brings up Las Vegas people. The point is, be
specific in what you ask and then generalize until you find something.
Many other things are available with the Internet. Old time radio, Football -
Yes you can listen to the games on your computer. You can even do
comparison-shopping or buy your groceries on line.
