Over the years I've allowed layers of burnt on whatever accumulate. I now
want to get rid of it. I soaked it in dishwater for 24 hours and used a lot
of elbow grease and a dish brush to get rid of a lot of it, but I can't get
down to the enamel. Is there something else I can soak it in -- other
recommendations? Steel wool would mess up the enamel, no?

Use oven cleaner.
