View Full Version : How to rid house of ants?

Recently we have had a rash of ants in our house. We have a two story
house, about 2400 sq feet. The ants are in the kitchen and laundry room
at one end of the 1st floor, and in the bathroom at the other end of the
house , on the 2nd floor. So, I am not sure if some sort of "spot"
treatment will help.
Do I need perimeter spraying , on the outside of the house , or should I be
thinking more of spot , inside spraying just in the areas where we see the
ants ??
Any ideas would be appreciated !!

Select a product with boric acid. "Terro" is one such product. The
application requires placing the bait on small squares of thin
cardboard. Once the ants discover the food source you'll see hundreds
of ants carrying the bait back to their nest and in 2-3 days they will
be gone. You do not need to spray insecticides and these won't kill
the queen anyway.

FWIW, last year I had some ants getting into my house, and neither
spraying where they were getting in inside, or outside along the wall,
discouraged them for more than a week or so. But pouring several pots
of boiling water on the large ant nest in the back yard got rid of
them for good. :-) No poisonous chemicals if you have pets, too.

I've had good luck with ant poison "food". They eat it, bring it
back to the nest, and both times I used it, the ants were gone
within two days. Once I knew where the hill was, other time I
had no idea - just poured the poison where I saw the most ants in
each place. BEWARE, the poison will kill pets, too! If you want
a brand name, come on back and I'll go see what it's called - the
can's still out in the garage, but it's very old now. I've
cleared out entire anthills with a teaspoon full.

Another thing you can do is sprinkle artificial sweetener around where
you've seen the ants. It's poisonous to the ants (and probably us which is
why I don't like it but keep some around for diabetic friends) Works great
and relatively non-toxic. Also agreeing with the borax post. Basically
sprinkling white powder around seems to be the trick (just make sure WHAT
white powder you're using <G>)

Depends on the type of ants they are, the majority of ants problems
will be coming from the outside, so treating the nest there will cure
your problem. There are a couple of species that are living indoor,
so the treatment will be an indoor issue.

Baits will probably be your best bet if they are a small ant. Terro
if they seem to like sugars, combat if they seem to like proteins
(grease, peanut butter)
If you wanted to hire a pro, what we have available now will pretty
much stop all ant activity for a year.

As simple as that seems, in almost every large city each year you
can probably find an article in the paper where someone was burned due
to a boiling water accident while treating ants. Had a customer that
was severely burned, their child just missed being injured and their
puppy was killed, all in the name of being environmentally friendly.

Not sure what you might have that could actually kill a pet if used as
label directions.
