Lightbulb Packing computers when moving house?

Packing Computers

* Back up all the files on your computer

* Ask your computer company if they recommend that you "park" your hard drive. This involves using a special program e.g."SHIP.EXE" that retracts the recording heads in the hard drive from the data area and into a "safer" area of the CPU.

* Pack your diskettes in a separate box, keeping them away from anything magnetic.

* Unhitch cables one at a time from the back of the PC, being sure to colour code or mark them in some way so that reassembly is easy. As you unhitch each cable, neatly bundle and use a wire/plastic tie or rubber band to keep it neat and secure.

* Ensure components are cool before putting each component part into a plastic bag. Place inside the original foam forms if you still have them. If not, use the double-box method, filling the smaller of two boxes with polystyrene foam peanuts. Place the monitor or CPU in a bag then place it in the middle of this box. Pack all surrounding empty space with foam blocks to prevent the computer from banging around inside the box. The goal is to prevent the computer from touching the sides of the box where it becomes vulnerable to external banging or piercing by sharp objects.

* Place cables in the box. Then, close and seal the box with tape.

* Fill the second, larger box with polystyrene peanuts and place the first box inside of it

* Small printers can be packed together with the CPU, but be sure to remove the printer cartridges. If your printer uses pins to form-feed paper, leave the paper in during the move to keep the pins in place.

* Attach an Inventory Sheet and mark it "Fragile"
